WEEK 9 - Field Works-On Campus Observation

IIUM Mosque

Week 9 Class Overview
In Week 9, we had a special fieldwork activity called "IIUM as a Sustainable Campus - Students as Agents of Change." We didn't have to attend class in person, but we were asked to observe a place on the IIUM Gombak campus. My group chose the mosque as our focus and took pictures to show how it contributes to sustainability. We also learned from a recorded lecture that explained the importance of sustainability and how students can help make a positive change.

Personal Reflection
After listening to the lecture, we realized that the mosque at IIUM is a great place to observe and reflect on sustainability. The mosque is a place where Muslims gather to pray, and it also helps build unity among people from different backgrounds. This supports SDG 17, which is about creating partnerships to achieve global goals. We divided our observations into three main ideas:

  1. A Place of Unity and Collaboration
The mosque brings people together, helping create a sense of community and understanding. This fits with SDG 17, which encourages building partnerships across different groups, cultures, and nations. The mosque's welcoming atmosphere helps start conversations about how we can all work together for a better world.

  2. Integration of Faith and Action
At IIUM mosque, the teachings of Islam about cooperation, justice, and caring for the environment connect with SDG 17’s message of working together globally. The mosque encourages us to reflect on how our faith can inspire us to take practical actions toward achieving sustainability goals.

  3. Educational and Networking Opportunities
The mosque is also linked to the university's academic and student projects, which focus on sustainability and working together with people from different faiths. These opportunities promote learning and cooperation, encouraging partnerships between the university, communities, and the world.

Conclusion
Observing the mosque for this project helped me understand how sustainability can be practiced in a spiritual context. Sustainability isn't just about big projects—it’s also about everyday actions in places like the mosque. I plan to talk to my friends and classmates about how we can all be active partners in making our campus more sustainable and living an eco-friendly lifestyle.
