WEEK 6 - Roles of Universities and Sustainable Development

How Universities Help Make the World a Better Place

Today’s lesson focused on how universities can play a big role in making the world more sustainable. We learned about how their programs, buildings, and community projects can support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our teacher showed us a video about how research, new ideas, and good leadership can improve the environment. For our activity, we explored the IIUM campus to find places that show sustainability in action. Our group chose the mosque as our focus because it connects people and encourages care for our surroundings.

Zero Hunger: A Lesson from Campus

One of the SDGs is “Zero Hunger,” which means making sure everyone has enough food. On our campus, the Bachelor of Education Students’ Association started a great program to help with this. They give out free breakfast to students in the morning so they can attend class without being hungry. This effort teaches three important lessons:

  1. The Impact of Hunger on Learning
Hunger can make it hard for students to focus, learn, or do well in school. This program shows how giving proper nutrition helps students succeed. It also reminds future teachers to notice if a student might need help and support programs like free meals.

  2. Teaching Sustainable Food Practices
Educators can use lessons about food, like gardening or reducing waste, to show how small changes can fight hunger. These lessons encourage students to make good choices for themselves and for the planet.

  3. Encouraging Community Involvement
Solving hunger takes teamwork. Programs like food drives or community gardens show how people working together can make a big difference, both nearby and around the world.

What I Can Improve

During this activity, I realized I need to get better at observing and connecting what I see with ideas about sustainability. For example, noticing how the mosque’s design helps save resources or bring people together. I also need to manage my time better during group work to ensure everyone has a chance to contribute. In the future, I want to join more campus projects about sustainability to learn and help more.

Conclusion

This lesson taught me how universities like IIUM can lead in creating a sustainable future. Exploring our campus helped me see how schools can set an example through creativity, teamwork, and smart solutions. These skills will help us face global challenges. I feel inspired to use what I’ve learned in my studies and personal actions to build a better, more sustainable world.
